I totally agree Ardath, and I'm rather surprised to see an article like this come out of the HubSpot camp.

I don't know anyone involved with content marketing that doesn't see it as a multi-part strategy, or at least a component of an overall marketing strategy.

"If a piece of content is not working, it can’t tell you why." -- This seem to be implying that a piece of text can't tell you what direct interaction with a person can. Put content is largely about creating a vehicle for that engagement in a new way. Besides that, there is plenty a piece of content can tell you using traffic metrics and the like. So I'm with you -- strange article, strange perspective.

Ardath, I hope you rant more often. I like this post.

I wish they had instead said "One sign that YOUR content marketing may be failing is if ALL YOU DO is market your content."

Last week, I posted Five Signs Your Content Marketing is an Illusion (http://digitalb2b.wordpress.com/2011/07/21/five-signs-your-content-marketing-is-an-illusion/). I think there is a nugget of truth the article was going for, unfortunately they missed it.

Too many content marketers just market content for the sake of a lead or registration. They don't allow the content to directly be a vehicle for their message. They don't care about the quality of their content as much as the effectiveness of their promotions. That's not content marketing, its just lead gen or email marketing wrapped around a piece of content.

(No need to click the link, I just gave it all away!)

Rant away, great post! Thanks for sharing.
