Great post on how to work with marketing content writers, Ardath.

I was fortunate that the first white paper I wrote was edited by Jill Konrath - a tough taskmaster indeed. It was a life-changing experience.

Businesses looking to hire marketing content writers will be served well by your tips.

Wow! Thank you very much, Richard. I'm glad you're here, as well.

Ardath,

Agree with everything you wrote, but should we be holding content writers to a much higher standard? I've been writing for forever, too, and no one has ever had to provide me with an "assignment template."

I always assumed that the things you have listed in your first bullet set were part of my job as the content writer.

Hi Dianna,

I appreciate your comment and question. I think you're used to taking on entire projects, not just content writing assignments. So, here's a question for you:

If you design a nurturing program that includes 10 articles aimed at a specific buyer type (persona) to address needs at different stages of their buying process and discover you need to outsource article #4 to a writer, how would you do that?

If you're creating a series of content that includes a webinar, an eBook, 4 blog posts and a few articles and want to outsource part of that, how would you ensure that whatever the writer produces matches the rest of the group of content?

Many companies don't hire content writers like you to create the whole program, but make assignments for the creation of separate pieces that must align with the whole of a program/campaign. That's what I use templates for.

Does that context make more sense?
