Paul Vaillant

What often happens is that an individual / company creates a truly innovative service or product resulting in the "appearance" of no competition as customers gravitate to the new solution. The advantage tends to be short lived however as few organizations can successfully innovate on an on-going basis. Competition does eventually arise and companies are well advised to prepare and adapt.

Bill

The humbling thing about capitalism is that if something works really well, competition - where once there wasn't any - floods in if the profits are sufficient.

And if the profits aren't sufficient, then no matter if you have no competition at all, you won't have any profits, either.

Sometimes, it's best to be "second-best" like Snapple. Develop something truly good (not necessarily great) but differentiate with service.
